Baking with kids: bonding and cupcakes

Baking is a love language.

I’ve always loved to bake, I even did a semester of culinary school until I realized one it was taking my whole day (I mean 7 to 5 like a job) and two I didn’t want to be a chef I wanted to bake! The school I went to only had everything in one, so I changed majors.

Why I love Baking.

There is a comfort in baking, from prepping to measuring, pouring to get everything just right, and when it finally comes out of the oven EATING!

I also love the comfort I give to my friends and family. Homemade cookies, cakes, and pies are what I love but baking with my kids takes the cake. (see what I did there?)

Little Helpers.

Whenever I get the urge to bake, I just grab something in the pantry and make a quick trip to the store if I need ingredients and bake till my little heart is content. Until one day my daughter asked to join and we’ve been baking together ever since. I do sometimes bake alone but I found baking with the kids helps give them time with me.

Benefits of Baking Together

What I love about baking with my kids is the time we spend together. We are spending time together making something that we can enjoy together. It helps my daughter with her reading and for my son, it’s a task he can focus on start to finish because he’s invested in the results.

I don’t care if it’s completely from scratch or instant cookie dough its valuable time spent with my child letting them know I’m here and listening when they need me. We’ve even gone live a few times on Instagram while baking to talk about things while we bake like my son’s sensory processing disorder.

It’s a great way to get them to talk about their day and their feelings. Also, my daughter uses it as a time to ask as many questions as possible about so many different topics.

It Doesn’t Have to be Pretty

Baking with your kids doesn’t mean it has to look as if it came off the food network. Even though I sometimes want it to look like the picture I know it won’t always and that’s ok because it’s just for them to enjoy. Sometimes we make a big mess that takes forever to clean and sometimes like with spooky cupcakes above they’re too scary to eat.

The beauty in baking is the bond you all are creating so focus on that and get to it. You’ll be glad you did.

This last baking experiment you guys can thank Brittany for as she embarks on a baking challenge of her own. It took me two weeks to feel well enough to do it, but we got it done and the kids loved it. If you want to follow along, check out her blog here as she bakes from Jerrelle Guy’s book Black Girl Baking available on kindle as well 🙂

XOXO,
Nifty
