I tried the viral TikTok Target closet, and this is how it went.
Hey there, fabulous mamas! It’s Seketa, your friendly neighborhood solo mom on a mission to level up my closet game. So let me spill the tea on my recent adventure with the viral Target closet refresh – ’cause, girl, it’s a game-changer!

Quick backstory: I waved goodbye to my ex-hubby over two years ago, snagged a fresh starter home for me and my kiddos, and dove headfirst into adulting. Budget life, you know? If you want to know more on that backstory you can check out my podcast Married Single Mom. My closet situation was, well, basic – a single rack holding my minimal wardrobe. But then, TikTok and my neighbor blessed my feed with those bookshelf magic tricks, and I thought, “Why not?” So cue a mobile order to my local Target for the bookshelves, a quick trip to Home Depot right next door, and here are some tips and tricks I have for you.
First tip, fam: measure your space! I skipped this step, assuming my neighbor’s closet was my closet. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. Got three Target bookshelves(grab the exact ones here) and, well, the space for my dresses was playing hard to get.
So, let me school you on how to nail this project without the mishaps I faced. Measure twice, buy once! Oh, and tackle this on a long weekend – I did it post a 4-day cruise, and let me tell you, sheer determination kept me going. Imagine no bed to sleep in – yikes!
Here’s your shopping list:
- Target bookshelves (get the deets via my link)
- Closet rods from Home Depot or Lowe’s
- Shorter nails (trust me, you’ll need ’em)
- Hangers – because you’ll suddenly have a ton more space!
- Hammer, electric/manual screwdriver, and a level
Potential extras:
- PVC pipe
- Hand saw

Quick hack: Those rod screws are a tad too long, so grab 1/2-inch nails to avoid poking through the bookshelf. I got three bookshelves and six rods, but the gap between two shelves was a struggle. Cue a trip to Lowe’s for PVC pipe and rod hooks to custom-fit that space.
The big reveal? My closet is now a masterpiece. Shirts, pants, dresses – all have their own VIP sections. Shoes? They’ve got their own cozy corner, too. And the top? Pure overflow heaven for bags and purses. Project cost? About $200:
- 3 bookshelves at $40
- 6 rods at $6
- Hangers $12
- PVC Pipe $6
- Hooks: $3
- 2 packs of screws: $1

Would I do it again? Absolutely! Would I plan better and not attempt this post-cruise exhaustion? A resounding heck yes. But echoing the TikTok squad – worth every second. 🌈 A year later, this project finally unpacked the last box, marking a new chapter in our lives. Single mamas, you got this! #ClosetGoals #SingleMomMagic
